What was your best/favorite subject in school?

My best subject in high school was social studies. I have always found history and economics fascinating. I had a great instructor in American History, and he encouraged my study of the Constitution and the branches of government. I considered going into the field, but I decided that a business degree was a better fit for my passions. I am an armchair historian, and I like to read a lot about the past.

What was your first job?

My first job was mowing lawns. My parents were very invested in me getting a job at a young age. It was much easier to find a job as a landscaper and lawn mower back then. By the time I was twelve, I had a large clientele collecting payment and processing customers’ requests. It required getting up and going out despite bad weather, and it gave me the experience to persevere when conditions were tough.

Where and how did you get into the industry you currently work in?

I was interested in digital marketing since the Internet boom of the late 1990s. I was instantly hooked by the field of marketing. I realized that I had a gift for helping companies show themselves in their best light. As the field changed, I kept up with all of the new developments. I helped several companies pioneer their digital marketing strategies. Many people were dismissive of the impact of digital advertising twenty years ago, and they must be kicking themselves over not taking digital advertising seriously.

How have those jobs prepared you for what you do now?

My natural drive to succeed started when I was a young man. I am motivated by helping companies to achieve their goals, but I feel that success in the field is a greater reward for me. With my strong background in marketing, I am able to help all kinds of companies put together effective branding. Marketing campaigns should always be fresh and exciting, and they should be coordinated among all formats. You don’t want your customers to get a different or misleading idea about your business because your messaging is not consistent.

Describe the best day of work you’ve ever had.

The best day of work I have ever had is when I first helped a company revolutionize their marketing campaigns. They showed incredible gains in their sales and their return on investment. They were very appreciative of my efforts, and I chalked up my success to my constant drive to succeed. I really enjoy my job, and I feel that it is crucial to feel that kind of passion for your line of business. If you’re just going through the motions, you won’t be able to create dynamic content for your clients.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

Challenges motivate me. I am always looking for a situation where I have to use all my talents and my persuasive communication style. I feel that I need to constantly innovate my work in order to feel satisfied. This pays off for my clients, who can take advantage of a fresh flow of ideas.

My family also motivates me. I am proud of being able to support them. Family also motivates me to have as much integrity as I can within the confines of my business. Just like a company’s brand, a family’s reputation is hard to repair if something goes wrong. Taking care of my family is a huge reason why I want to succeed in business.

What kind of business ideas excite you most?

I am always looking for the next big thing. I would love to invest in a business that puts a truly novel spin on marketing. Meeting the customer where they are isn’t enough. I also want to create a vision for a company that will help them succeed far into the future. If someone is able to create a new idea that is as disruptive as digital marketing was 20 years ago, I need to be part of it.

Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?

As a consultant, I have to market myself and Metanoia constantly. I use a great deal of online advertising. I get a lot of my business through multiple channels which isn’t really an unconventional technique anymore. As time goes by, some of the most tried-and-true notions have become trendy again. For example, we are seeing a return to direct mail and tele-sales by some marketing firms.

What personal achievement are you most proud of?

I am most proud of surrounding myself with great people. All of my skills and expertise have brought me to where I am but hiring and attracting the right people keep me there. I am also proud of my family especially my wife. She is what motivates me to go further and to keep going when things become difficult.

What wisdom would you have liked to share with yourself when you first started out?

I would tell myself not to worry about my future career prospects. When I first became an Entrepeneur, I was concerned that my marketing ideas wouldn’t work. Taking calculated chances has turned out to be the best thing I’ve ever done.
