What was your best/favorite subject in school?
I think it is a no-brainer that math was my absolute favorite subject. I was always good at solving problems and coming up with alternative solutions to existing problems. I would spend the majority of my time working through math problems outside of school when there was no homework. Fortunately, my interest in math would lead me to a career in the financial industry.
What was your first job?
My first job was as a teller at our local bank. My father was a banker for many years and provided me with a lot of secondhand banker experience. Fortunately, I was able to excel fairly well in a banking environment. I learned so much from the people around me that it helped me grow professionally and personally. I am incredibly grateful for the experiences that I received at that bank.
Where and how did you first get into the industry you currently work in?
I landed a consulting position as soon as I graduated from college. It was there that I learned a lot about the financial industry on a higher scale. That consultancy job helped me realize my potential and pushed me forward to become a better version of myself. Thankfully, it would help me overcome the insecurities that I was feeling in my life at the time. That consultancy job also helped me gain some important connections in the financial industry.
How have those jobs prepared you for what you do now?
As I have mentioned before, those jobs that I have worked helped shape me into a financial professional that people trust. It is incredibly important that you combine research with a hands-on approach when it comes to learning. I would not be able to be as successful as I am now if I were to simply study finances in a classroom. I would also not be successful if I jumped into the fire without doing any research. Combining these two types of learning is crucial to ensure that we can grow as individuals within our industry. It is a tightrope walk that we must walk in the beginning of our careers.
Describe the best day of work you’ve ever had.
This may be a tearjerker of a story. There was a couple that approached me for a personal loan. They had just been rejected from every single bank that they had worked at before. The couple had just experienced a catastrophic life event that left them penniless. They needed money to save them from being evicted from their home. Fortunately, I was able to sit down with them and go over all the details of their case.
It did not take long for me to make a connection with them. I wanted to empathize with them that I was a friend as well as a banker. They were able to trust me fairly quickly in that regard. I was able to provide them with a loan that would help them cover their expenses. Their entire world was turned right side up whenever I did this. They got the money that they needed and got a second chance at saving their home. This financial cushion was enough to keep them going while the husband found reliable work. This was an incredibly gratifying experience that made me feel good about myself. It reminded me that I am doing good things each and every day for people that come see me.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
As mentioned before, it felt really good to know that I was helping people with my services. It motivates me to know that I am doing a good job when I help people that are experiencing a severe crisis like the couple I mentioned. I want to help as many people as possible and hearing that I did a good job just reinforces the idea that I am doing something positive. This gets me out of bed in the morning and motivates me throughout my day.
What kind of business ideas excite you most?
I am most excited by business ideas that make me think outside of the box. There are dozens of non-traditional ways to make money. I like it whenever someone finds a new idea and capitalizes on it. It motivates me to think outside the box every day as well.
Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?
I don’t believe in gimmicks that attract attention to your business. I have never considered using any kind of viral marketing tactic to gain traffic towards my business. We organically approach every client to ensure that they receive a wholesome service anytime they work with us.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to remain successful for so long. There have been so many temptations in my life that could have pushed me over the edge. However, I know that staying true to myself was the best and right thing to do.
What wisdom would you have liked to share with yourself when you first started out?
Take more time off for yourself!
