Music is an incredible component to media. It helps inspire us whenever we are watching an important scene during a movie or it can help us get over a bad mood whenever we are experiencing a tough situation. However, we have changed the way that we have begun to experience music. Technology has allowed us to find ways to stream it effortlessly to our smart devices and other forms of technology. Lindsay Guion is the Founder, CEO, and Chairman of GUION PARTNERS and has found a way to combine music and technology effortlessly. He has worked with dozens of high-profile clients in media, entertainment, and sports since the inception of his company. Let’s learn more about Lindsay Guion and find out what makes him so successful.
What was your best/favorite subject in school?
This one should be a no-brainer! I was hooked on music the moment that I joined my middle school’s band. I had always known that I wanted to become a musician in some way. I would spend countless hours in my room practicing music. It was therapy to me. I did not have a lot of friends during my early years in school and this was a way that I would feel a form of connectedness. Fortunately, music would open my eyes to the world around me when I became older.
Where and how did you first get into the industry you currently work in?
I studied at both Georgetown and Harvard back in my college days. I would end up connecting with some high-profile contacts during this time. They looked over my portfolio and told me that I had a lot of potential. They recommended that I join the music industry as soon as I could graduate. I wasn’t about to turn down this advice from these professional recording artists. I would eventually begin making my way through the entertainment industry. This experience was pivotal for me to create my own company that I run now.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
A lot of what I do is creative work. That means that I am constantly trying to create music throughout my day. However, creative work is different than physical labor. You may find yourself burning out of your work if you are not careful. It is easier to do physical work in my opinion. I wish it was the same for creative work.
I knew that I would need to spend some time to figure out how I can solve my burnout problem. I would work for extended periods of time and then have nothing left to give whenever a big project would come up. My motivation would plummet. This would cause my productivity to dwindle. Fortunately, I found a personal system that I could implement that could keep me going when I didn’t feel up to it.
I take breaks as often as I can. I do everything in my power to get away from my workstation. Spending less time there is crucial for creativity. I will go for a walk and find something to do that will get my mind off of things. This always helps me break out of any funk that I am feeling. Fortunately, this break system has kept me motivated over the years. I recommend it for all creative artists who work professionally.
Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?
I have always believed that viral marketing is just a gimmick. While it does generate traffic to your business in the short term, you will not be able to retain that traffic in the long run since it’s incredibly rare to recreate what made your marketing go viral in the first place. I believe that the longer route is always the best way to build loyalty for your business. This is why I make sure that our marketing plans are organic and that we seem genuine about what we do.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
I had a lot of friends who did not support me when I was growing up. I always felt like an outcast due to the fact that I had dreams and wanted to create something. I avoided pursuing a lot of my passions during this time due to the fact that I worried about what other people think. However, I would end up overcoming this mental barrier that I created for myself and make a company that I was proud of.
That is by far the most incredible achievement I have ever accomplished. Fortunately, this is only the beginning. There are a lot of plans for GUION PARTNERS in the future. I have surrounded myself with people that advocate my success, and I am very thankful for them.
