What was your best/favorite subject in school?
My favorite subject was most certainly photography. I was never interested in English and math. I always wanted to learn how to capture the world around me through my lenses. However, my school did not have the proper resources to teach photography to the fullest. This would encourage me to seek out further education from mentors in the area.
What was your first job?
I started out mowing yards for people around town. I learned the value of hard work from my actions. I would save up enough money to buy the camera equipment that got me started whenever I was young.
Where and how did you first get into the industry you currently work in?
I made some solid connections whenever I went to college. I kept working on my craft and refining it over and over again. Someone would eventually notice and pointed me in the right direction towards my first big contract. I did some freelance work here and there and would eventually find myself opening my own studio.
How have those jobs prepared you for what you do now?
They taught me the ways of the industry. Photography is fickle. You never know when your next job is going to be. They taught me to be patient and persistent whenever things get tough.
Describe the best day of work you’ve ever had.
I did a wedding photo shoot one day and caught something incredible on camera. The bride and the groom were both crying as they said their vows. It was a beautiful moment that could only be captured through a camera. It was a moment of pure happiness. They thanked me later for capturing that special moment for them. That made me feel like the work I was doing had incredible value.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
I always think of new ways to challenge myself. There are plenty of photographic styles that I have never tried before.
What kind of business ideas excite you most?
I like businesses that implement the idea of interactivity with their customers. Social media has allowed me to find some of the most incredible people I have ever met. I love posting information on my social media accounts and then interacting with people who respond later. It is incredibly validating to hear their feedback and praise.
Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?
I can’t say that I have. I know that some businesses try to use viral marketing in order to get noticed. Unfortunately, that can backfire pretty quickly. I believe in running your business with integrity and honor. That is the best way to get noticed.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
I was able to capture photos of a couple who had given birth to their child. It was a bittersweet moment that I will never forget. Words cannot explain the emotions that were captured on those prints. You just have to see it to believe it.
What wisdom would you have liked to share with yourself when you first started out?
Take your time and don’t rush anything. Everything will come in time.
