Fashion is something that we oftentimes take for granted. We wear different types of clothes and don’t realize that someone experienced created these outfits for us. Fortunately, Caitlin Craig Lawrence has created some incredible fashion designs in her short amount of time in the big leagues. This up and coming fashion designer experienced humble beginnings when she was raised by her loving parents in Kansas. However, Cait knew that she wanted more out of life than to simply live in a rural area with limited opportunities. She would seek education at Bauder College and has experienced some incredible opportunities since joining the industry. She continues to make connections and slowly climb the ladder in the professional design industry.
What was your best/favorite subject in school?
My absolute favorite subject in school was art. I spent countless hours drawing up fashion designs that I had in my head. I always felt like I could make a career out of it. However, there was a lot of uncertainty on my end that held me back in the beginning. Fortunately, I was able to overcome most of that adversity. I’m thankful that I had the chance to learn so much about art when I was in school. It has really paid off in the long run.
Where and how did you first get into the industry you currently work in?
I started working for a few clients after I had graduated from college. They were small-time jobs that helped me develop my experience. However, I had my first big break when I ended up dressing up famous celebrities for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. It was an incredible experience and I got to meet so many famous people! I made a lot of connections after that event and have been working closely with them ever since.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
I like to remind myself that I am providing a valuable service for people. I help them build their confidence by providing them with fashion designs. There was a while that I did not feel like I was providing valuable resources to the world. I saw bankers, doctors, finance professionals, and more provide services that keep the world going. However, I was approached by a fan one day that told me that they appreciated my work and that my clothes had given them a new sense of confidence. It made me so happy to hear that. I knew that I had to continue working harder.
That fateful encounter made me believe in myself again. There is a lot of value in fashion. The way that we dress dictates how we feel about ourselves. How we feel about ourselves can affect our confidence. Our confidence is such a big factor in our lives that helps us throughout our daily routines. I had this realization and it helped motivate me to keep working hard on my craft.
Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?
I can’t say that I have. I know that some businesses use viral marketing techniques with off-the-wall advertising. However, I don’t fully agree with some of their methods. They can be hit-or-miss and potentially ruin your company’s image. This is why I believe in organic marketing. Let the audiences come to you by simply doing good work and not trying to follow trends. Your audience retention rate will be much higher and you will find yourself with a dedicated following.
What personal achievement are you most proud of?
I am very proud of my involvement of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction where I dressed some famous celebrities. It was such an incredible experience that I am still reeling over it. I wish I could go back and experience it again! However, the connections that I made were crucial to my career. I was so nervous whenever I found out that I was going to do it! I almost backed out of it due to fear. However, I knew in my heart that I should step up and put my best work out there. Fortunately, the payoff was incredible.
