What was your best/favorite subject in school?

In high school, I was always fond of PE. My friends and I would use this class to catch up, play sports, and have a good time. When I was in college, on the other hand, things got serious, and finance became my favorite topic. For some peculiar reason, I was very impressed by the back-end work that goes into things like the government’s bond issue and purchase, the stock market, as well as yield ratios.

What was your first job?

I worked as a part-time assistant for a partner in a law firm. My work was mostly based on keeping track of meetings, projects and all correspondence between the partner and the other associates or clients. I was exposed to important tasks and garnered amazing organizational skills from it.

Where and how did you first get into the industry you currently work in?

My first full-time job after college was in the finance area. I worked for a portfolio-managing company that dealt with private equity. This enabled me to put my finance knowledge to the test and realize that there was a lot more to learn. Funny how schools make things look effortless, right?

How have those jobs prepared you for what you do now?

There is not a lot that you can do to prepare for being a president of a company unless you have already served in the same role somewhere else. Given the amount of work that is unique to this position, your learning curve is very steep at first. As time goes, you get more accustomed and realize that you have to rely on those characteristics that caused people to make you the president in the first place.

Describe the best day of work you’ve ever had.

The best day of work, for me, was realizing that we had a five-star rating on the Better Business Bureau’s website. We’ve helped so many people over the years and knowing that our standards shine through is always a good day at work.

How do you keep yourself motivated?

By doing something that I love. When you see your job as a platform to make good things happen and help those around you, it is effortless to get up and go to work. Thus, I seldom, if ever, experience issues that push my motivation to the edge. Ultimately, when that does happen, I rely on my family to aid me in overcoming problems that facilitated such unprecedented stress.

What kind of business ideas excite you most?

I like coming up with ways to include more low-level workers in the company’s planning. When you think about it, most of what I do would be impossible if it was not for those who work at the bottom of the ladder and initially work with customers. Sure, people in upper management are responsible for running the company, but there would be no company left to run if everyone working at a staff level decided to leave.

Have you ever tried any unorthodox techniques to attract attention to your business?

Well, that depends on what your definition of unorthodox is. For example, some of my friends think that I always talk about my job to recruit them or market my services. But, there are also those who find this normal and wonder why I have not gone as far as to use personal social media to make my company’s brand more visible.

What personal achievement are you most proud of?

Having a beautiful family and being able to provide for them is my most significant accomplishment up to date. In the past, most of my anxiety came from the fact that there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding the future of our business. Looking back at the past and many economic downturns that took place, one would be absurd not to have felt this type of pressure.

What wisdom you would have liked to share with yourself when you first started out?

Read more. I did not get into reading for recreation until late in my career. This undoubtedly prevented me from learning a lot of valuable communication techniques as going through a few books every month certainly does wonders for your speaking abilities. Not to mention that doing this is a great way to develop and maintain healthy habits that can become instrumental to your long-term success and overall longevity. Also, you get to learn a ton of words that you did not even know existed!
